As Black History Month has come to an end, we thought it noteworthy to acknowledge well known Black Attorneys.  Throughout history, many Black lawyers have made significant contributions to the legal profession and the fight for civil rights. Here are a few notable examples:

1. Thurgood Marshall – Thurgood Marshall was a prominent civil rights lawyer and the first African American Supreme Court Justice in the United States. He was instrumental in the landmark 1954 case Brown v. Board of Education, which declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional.

2. Constance Baker Motley – Constance Baker Motley was the first African American woman to serve as a federal judge and was a key figure in the Civil Rights Movement. She was involved in numerous cases that challenged segregation and discrimination, including Brown v. Board of Education.

3. Charles Hamilton Houston – Charles Hamilton Houston was a key figure in the Civil Rights Movement and is known as the “architect of the modern civil rights movement.” He worked to end segregation and discrimination through the legal system and was a mentor to Thurgood Marshall.

4. Robert Carter – Robert Carter was an attorney and civil rights leader who was involved in several important civil rights cases, including Brown v. Board of Education. Carter also played a key role in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

5. Martín A. Gleason – Martín A. Gleason was the first African American to practice law in the state of New York. He was a pioneer in the fight for civil rights and worked to end segregation in the state.

These are just a few examples of the many Black lawyers who have made a lasting impact on the legal profession and the fight for civil rights.
